Pakistan and Bangladesh have launched a direct shipping service between Karachi and Chittagong. The move significantly reduces delivery times and improves trade efficiency. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the development in a written reply to the National Assembly. He highlighted several positive outcomes in trade and economic cooperation since the formation of the interim government. The service marks a major step in strengthening regional trade links.

The new shipping route cuts delivery time of goods from 23 days to just 10 days. This improvement enhances logistical efficiency and lowers transportation costs. Businesses in both countries are expected to benefit from faster shipments. Dar emphasized that the development will make trade smoother and more predictable. The service is seen as a milestone in Pakistan-Bangladesh economic collaboration.

Bangladesh has also abolished the 100% inspection requirement for Pakistani exports at its ports. The change, effective September 29, 2024, will reduce customs delays and ease trade. Dar called the move a “breakthrough in bilateral trade facilitation.” He said it will improve trust between the two nations and make Pakistani exports more competitive. The decision is expected to encourage more trade and investment.

The foreign minister highlighted that Pakistan exported 50,000 metric tons of rice to Bangladesh under a 200,000 metric ton agreement. The 9th Joint Economic Session (JEC) held on October 27 focused on expanding trade, investment, and connectivity. More than 200 Pakistani companies participated in the Dhaka International Trade Fair and the Bangladesh Denim Expo. These steps underscore Pakistan’s growing engagement in Bangladesh’s textile and manufacturing sectors.

To further improve connectivity, Pakistan and Bangladesh are planning direct air travel between the countries. Bangladesh has allowed two Pakistani private airlines to operate on the route. Officials are finalizing flight schedules and logistics for business and tourism purposes. Dar said the air service will complement the shipping route and boost overall trade and people-to-people exchange. Both countries aim to strengthen economic and cultural ties further.
